Why does alcohol and smoking effect hemorrhoids?

I smoke, I drink and recently have been suffering from enflamed hemorrhoids. They seem to only stop bothering me for days at a time and then *bam* they're back. When reading on how to treat hemorrhoids I always see "stop smoking/stop drinking"...but I don't see how either would effect hemorrhoids...so how does smoking or drinking "cause" hemorrhoids?
