Don't Confuse Hemorrhoids With Other Anal And Rectal Diseases

Hemorrhoids are a very common condition. However, they should not be confused with anal or rectal diseases.

There are numerous anal and rectal diseases that may require medications or extensive treatment and these conditions should not be confused with hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are external or internal and may be resolved or prevented simply by changing your diet.

There are a few diseases that you should be aware of that are not related to hemorrhoids.

First, proctitis is the inflammation of the lining of the rectum. It can be short term or long term. There are many causes of proctitis. It may be a side effect of medical treatments like radiation therapy or antibiotics. It may be caused by sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea, herpes, and chlamydia. It may be related to ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, or autoimmune conditions that cause inflammation in the colon or small intestine. A few other causes include rectal injury, bacterial infection, allergies, and malfunction of the nerves in the rectum.

A common symptom of proctitis is frequent or continuous sensation or urge to have a bowel movement. Other symptoms may include constipation, a feeling of rectal fullness, left-sided abdominal pain, passage of mucus through the rectum, rectal bleeding, and anorectal pain.

Treatment for proctitis may be antibiotics if it is caused by an infection. If it is similar to an ulcer, a regular medicine treatment may be necessary.

Ulcerative colitis is a disease that causes inflammation and sores, called ulcers, in the lining of the rectum and colon. Ulcers form where inflammation has killed the cells that usually line the colon, then bleed and produce pus. Inflammation in the colon also causes the colon to empty frequently, causing diarrhea.

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the general name for diseases that cause inflammation in the small intestine and colon. People with ulcerative colitis have abnormalities of the immune system, but doctors do not know whether these abnormalities are a cause or a result of the disease. The body’s immune system is believed to react abnormally to the bacteria in the digestive tract. The treatments for ulcerative colitis usually is medications.

Bleeding in the digestive tract is a symptom of a disease rather than a disease itself. Bleeding can occur as the result of a number of different conditions, some of which are life threatening. These conditions include ulcers, possibly hemorrhoids, inflammation of the esophagus or the small and large intestines.

Most causes of bleeding are related to conditions that can be cured or controlled, such as ulcers or hemorrhoids. The cause of bleeding may not be serious, but locating the source of bleeding is important. The source of the bleeding is usually determined by an endoscopy. After the source of the bleeding is found, the treatment will be determined.

As hemorrhoids may have a possible prevention and treatment course, it is important to learn to recognize hemorrhoids versus another disorder. If an anal or rectal disorder is found, it may be necessary to see a physician and obtain medications.
