Hemorrhoids are very common in men women and individuals of any age. There are many ways to prevent hemorrhoids. Additionally, if you do get hemorrhoids, there are many ways to treat hemorrhoids. There are many dos and don’ts that will help you understand your condition.

The Dos of Hemorrhoids Prevention and Treatment:

•    Do avoid constipation. Constipation can lead to straining during a bowel movement, which can lead to hemorrhoids.
•    Do eat a high fiber diet, which may include fresh fruit, raw and cooked vegetables, whole grain breads and cereals, prunes, raisins, popcorn, figs, pears and beans.
•    Reduce the intake of caffeine, coffee, tea and spicy food as they may act as irritants and cause pain during bowel movement
•    Do drink plenty of water (8 to 10 glasses a day)
•    Do get plenty of exercise (as simple as a short, brisk walk)
•    Do go to the bathroom on a regular basis
•    Do use a stool softener if you have been experiencing constipation
•    Do keep the area around your hemorrhoid clean and dry as possible
•    Do use a baby wipe, clean cloth or witch hazel to clean the area.  Witch hazel is an anti-inflammatory, which can help soothe and shrink hemorrhoids.
•    Do use ointments and hemorrhoid pads to relieve itching and pain.  This could include petroleum jelly, aloe vera or an over the counter ointment, such as Preparation H.
•    Do use sitz baths (baths of warm water) to help relieve pain, inflammation and itching
•    Do try natural methods.  There are numerous natural treatments you can use, such as aromatherapy.
•    Do try cold, such as cryogenics.  There are various treatments to purchase that allow you to place a cold device against the hemorrhoid.  The cold makes the hemorrhoid shrivel up and disappear.

The Don’ts of Hemorrhoid Prevention and Treatment:

•    Don’t wait till you have the urge to have a bowel movement.

•    Don’t linger on the toilet.  This position places extra pressure on the anal area.
•    Don’t stand or sit for long periods of time.  If your job involves sitting, get up and move around for a few minutes at least every hour or two.
•    Don’t ignore serious hemorrhoids, if you have used at home methods without any luck, you should consult a physician.
•    Don’t drink excessive caffeine or alcohol.
•    Don’t hesitate to consult a physician.  Although hemorrhoids are embarrassing, they can be easily treatable.
