Hemorrhoids are very common in men and women. However, there are ways to prevent hemorrhoids from forming and easy treatments.
Hemorrhoids are very common; however they are preventable if you understand the possible causes. These causes include constipation, straining during bowel movements, hypertension, sitting for long periods, pregnancy and the consumption of caffeine and alcohol.
One of the most common causes of hemorrhoids is constipation.
It is suggested that you take precautions against constipation. A bout of constipation may aggravate the hemorrhoids and prevent them from improving. You may reduce constipation by eating fiber rich foods, drinking plenty of water and exercising on a regular basis. In eating fiber rich foods, you help create a softer stool that is easier to pass and will lessen the irritation of current hemorrhoids.
Another cause of hemorrhoids is straining during bowel movements. This straining can be a result of constipation. To avoid hemorrhoids, do not wait till you have the urge to have a bowel movement. It is important to go to the bathroom on a regular basis. If you are having problems, you may consult your physician for a stool softener. Additionally, do not linger on the toilet, this causes additional pressure on the anal wall. Especially, when you are pregnant, this position places extra pressure on the area and therefore does not help with the hemorrhoids.
Hypertension can also cause hemorrhoids because of the connections between the portal vein and the vena cava which occur in the rectal wall. To reduce hypertension, you should see a physician.
Obesity can also be a factor of increasing rectal vein pressure. Obesity alone can lead to hemorrhoids, as poor muscle tone or poor posture can also result in too much pressure on the rectal veins.
Another common cause of hemorrhoids is sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time. It is important to take regular breaks, especially if you are pregnant. If your job involves sitting, get up and move around for a few minutes at least every hour or two.
Pregnancy is a very common cause of hemorrhoids. Pregnancy may lead to hypertension and increase strain during bowel movements.
It has also been shown that excessive consumption of alcohol or caffeine can cause hemorrhoids. Both can cause diarrhea, which in turn may lead to hemorrhoids. Additionally, it should be noted that caffeine ingestion increases blood pressure transiently, although it is not thought to cause chronic hypertension. Alcohol can also cause alcoholic liver disease leading to portal hypertension (another cause of hemorrhoids).
In realizing these possible causes of hemorrhoids, you can possibly avoid getting them. It would appear that from diet and exercise alone you will be helping yourself.
