The subject of hemorrhoids is not very pleasant, but a surprising number of people suffer from them. Hemorrhoids are abnormally swollen veins in the rectum and anus. When bulging hemorrhoid veins are irritated, they cause surrounding membranes to swell, burn, itch, become very painful, and bleed. Hemorrhoids are caused by too much pressure in the rectum, forcing blood to stretch and bulge the walls of the veins, sometimes rupturing them. How can you avoid sitting all day if you have a seated job? If your main job activity is seated, always stand or walk during your breaks. Make it a point to stand and walk at least 5 minutes every hour and try to shift frequently in your chair to avoid direct rectal pressure. Find time to walk and have regular exercise outside of walk, ideally 30 minutes a day. Exercise can also help ward off constipation by keeping the digestive system moving. Don't hold your breath or strain to pass a stool. When you feel the urge to have a bowel movement, don't wait long to use the bathroom; your stool could become dry and harder to pass if you delay.
It is true that once you find yourself suffering from hemorrhoids that you are more likely to suffer from the problem again some time in the future. If you are a person that sits a lot or is required to sit because of a job you may be placing strain to the rectal area and not even know it. In this situation it would be best to make sure you make time to move around periodically throughout the day to keep blood flowing as mentioned above.
Take a high fiber lunch, and muffin for break, make a trip to the water cooler at least once an hour, which will make sure you are walking around as suggested and also getting the water you need. Also, try shifting from side to side occasionally to take the pressure off the rectum.
On the other hand, when your place of work requires that you stand all day, take time to sit and put your feet up, or lie down if possible maybe on break, or at lunchtime. Add fiber to your daily diet and drink 8 glasses of water as well.
Straining while lifting heavy objects makes you at greater risk. You can protect yourself by learning to breathe correctly when lifting and talking to your healthcare professional about proper belts to wear to support you when lifting. Either way, take extra care when doing repetitive lifting to avoid not just hemorrhoids but injury to your back and legs.
Straining during lifting can cause rectal stress, and pain and therefore hemorrhoids. Seek medical care if these develop and don’t continue to do heavy lifting until the hemorrhoids are treated.
If these preventive measures fail, you must take action right away! Hemorrhoids are one condition that can be mild in the morning and become intolerable by nightfall.
