Hemorrhoids affect a very large percentage of the American population. Not all hemorrhoids go away on their own and if gone untreated, they can become worse.
Hemorrhoids may itch, be painful and can bleed. They can be described as swollen masses of varicose veins in the anus and the rectum. Hemorrhoids can be treated rather easily, but many individuals avoid treatment due to lack of knowledge or embarrassment at their condition.
There are two types of hemorrhoids: internal and external
Your healthcare physician can prescribe you an oral medication to treat your hemorrhoids. Some available medications are Anusol HC, Hydrocortisone Pramoxine, Proctofoam and Proctosedyl. These medications are meant to ease swelling, pain, bleeding and itching as a result of hemorrhoids.
Many of these medications are only meant to ease symptoms and not necessarily to cure the problem.
Possible side effects of hemorrhoid medications include skin burning, skin itching, chills and fever, depression, diarrhea, mood swings, personality changes and dryness, bleeding and stabbing pain in the rectum.
Anusol HC
Anusol HC is a topical hydrocortisone cream made from synthetic steroids and anti-inflammatory agents. Containing benzyl alcohol, petrolatum, stearyl alcohol, propylene glycol, isopropyl myristate, polyoxyl 40 stearate, carbomer 934, sodium lauryl sulfate, edentate disodium, sodium hydroxide and purified water, Anusol-HC 2.5% should be applied to the affected area two to four times a day, depending on the severity of the condition.
Hydrocortisone Pramoxine
Pramoxine is an anesthetic and works by interfering with pain signals sent from the nerves to the brain. Hydrocortisone is a steroid, which reduces the actions of chemicals in the body that cause inflammation, redness and swelling. Hydrocortisone Pramoxine should not be used by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Proctofoam HC
Proctofoam HC Foam is a combination topical corticosteroid and local anesthetic. It works by reducing skin inflammation (redness, swelling, itching, and irritation) in a way that is not exactly understood. It also decreases pain in the affected area.
Proctosedyl
Available in either ointment form or suppositories, Proctosedyl is a medication which is used in the reduction of swelling, pain and inflammation of hemorrhoids as well as other rectal lesions. In addition to treatment of hemorrhoids, it’s also used to treat proctitis, fissures, cryptitis, pain following rectal surgery and rectal itching.
It’s important for each individual to thoroughly discuss available medications with his or her healthcare professional. There is some complaint with doctors examining a patient for hemorrhoids, speaking with the patient regarding symptoms and writing out a prescription without giving it much thought. Make sure you go over other medications and supplements you’re currently taking with your doctor and that you’re aware of any possible side effects.
