Alternative Hemorrhoid Treatment: Horseradish Poultice

When nothing else seems to be working, we tend to turn to natural and alternative methods of treatments for hemorrhoids. Not all hemorrhoids are painful or uncomfortable, but for those that are, they can become worse if left untreated.

A hemorrhoid is an enlarged vein in the anal and rectal area. Hemorrhoids can sometimes be painful and at times may bleed. More than 70 % of people will experience a hemorrhoid at some point in their life.

Treatment may be necessary even if the hemorrhoid doesn’t seem to be bothering you

Prevention may be the key to curing hemorrhoids, but experts are still unsure of the causes of hemorrhoids, so prevention is somewhat difficult. Once a person gets a hemorrhoid, the likelihood that they will suffer from hemorrhoids again in the future.

Hemorrhoids are varicose veins in the anus or rectum. Pregnancy, constipation, obesity and having an obstruction in the lower intestine are all thought to be contributors of hemorrhoids.

The truth is that although we don’t really know that causes hemorrhoids, we do know that everyone has them. Whether or not they become serious or actually protrude out of the anus is dependent on each individual.

What we do know is that people who sit for prolonged periods of time, are pregnant or overweight tend to be more prone to hemorrhoids than those who do not fall into those categories. It is also believed that staying physically active will make our veins and muscles stronger too.

When we’ve done everything we can and we are still suffering from uncomfortable and painful hemorrhoids, it may be necessary to seek further treatment. Sometimes going to the doctor can seem embarrassing and awkward and an alternative treatment option may seem like a better choice.

An old folk remedy for hemorrhoid treatment is to use a horseradish poultice. A homemade horseradish poultice can speed up the healing process as well as relief symptoms. It works by drawing much needed blood to the affected area.

Use a horseradish poultice by applying a thin layer of freshly grated horseradish to a wet cloth. Place the cloth on your anus for five to ten minutes. If you are concerned about skin irritation, go ahead and apply olive oil to your skin beforehand. You can also apply witch hazel, which can be found in any pharmacy section of most stores. Witch hazel acts as a protective layer over the skin while helping to heal the area.

Calendula oil or calendula cream can also be excessively helpful. If Calendula oil can also be made at home with very basic ingredients picked up from the health food store. Calendula oil takes two weeks to make and so most people make it ahead of time and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
