Hemorrhoids, also referred to as piles, are very common. Hemorrhoids are actually distended veins in the anal canal. When veins stretch under pressure, the veins in the lower part of the rectum or anus stretch, swell or descend into the anal canal.
Prolapse or protruding veins are considered to be hemorrhoids. When distended, the set of veins inside the rectum result in internal hemorrhoids and the set of veins under the skin around the anus result in external piles when extended.
There are many reasons why pressure may increase in the veins of the lower part of the rectum and anus
There are several degrees of hemorrhoids. By the time a hemorrhoid reaches the third degree, the hemorrhoidal mass protrudes from the anus during defecation or on exerting force and remains protruded until forced back into the anus with the fingers.
Oral medicines, such as laxatives and stool softeners may help reduce irritation associated with third degree hemorrhoids, however, by the time an individual reaches the third degree, oral and topical treatments alone will not cure the problem.
An individual may also soak their buttocks in a warm bath 10 to 15 minutes each time up to four times a day. Anti-inflammatory creams may also be of assistance with relieving hemorrhoid symptoms.
A brief breakdown of hemorrhoid treatments:
Barren band ligation is used to treat an internal hemorrhoid. This works by attaching a rubber band around the base. The pressure applied by the rubber band will stop the circulation in the tied off pile mass. With this treatment, the mass will gradually fall off, usually within seven to ten days.
Crayo surgery is when the affected part is frozen by nitrous oxide or carbandioxide gas. This process causes the circulation to be cut off, which destroys the pile mass. This method of treatment is one which is preferred by many surgeons.
Cauterization used to be a more popular treatment option, but is not longer in use by most surgeons. It was used to shrink the mass by using bursts of electric currents.
Infrared photo coagulation is when infra red rays are given to an external hemorrhoid, which cuts off circulation to it. This procedure may cause the patient to experience a small amount of heat. The mass will fall off on its own within a few days.
Laser therapy is when the hemorrhoid is vaporized by a laser beam. This procedure causes minimal pain and bleeding.
Conventional surgery is another method of treating hemorrhoids. Also referred to as open and closed hemorrhoidectomy, this operation is performed under anesthetic. The vein mass is tied and cut off during this procedure with a surgical knife or surgical scissors. The patient will be hospitalized for 24 to 48 hours after the surgery.
